The Mediterranean Diet Influence of Hydroxytyrosol
The health benefits of the Mediterranean Diet have been proven by research. There is a lower mortality rate from heart disease and cancer in countries around the Mediterranean region when compared to Northern European and Western Countries. One of the major ingredients found in the Mediterranean Diet(Med Diet) is the Olive, and Olive Oil.
The medicinal value of the Olive fruit and leaf (Olea Europaea) has been recognized for centuries by those living in this region. Specific interest has been given to the polyphenols of the Olive plant and oil. A polyphenol that has been given special attention is Hydroxytyrosol, a potent anti-oxidant with strong anti-atherogenic, anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer properties.
Reduce Chronic Disease Risks: Health Conscious to Health Practice
Medical and Health Care Professionals can provide support to patients and clients for many health conditions. Many risk factors for disease such as heart disease, strokes, cancer and metabolic disorders are reduced with nutritional support and supplements.
As a practicing Physical Therapist the majority of my client base are musculoskeletal injuries related to overuse and degenerative joint diseases. The underlying cause of many of these diagnosed diseases and syndromes can be directed to inflammation, poor circulation, oxidative stress and the processes of aging.
Patient education is an important component of patient care and health outcomes. How we, as health care providers, can influence patient health has a positive impact on preventing chronic diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, stroke and cancer.
Healthy Self-care practices make a strong impact at reducing the risk of chronic diseases.
These practices may include, though are not limited to:
- Proper diet and nutritional practices
- Supplements to support dietary needs
- Stress management
- Exercise and an active lifestyle
The Health Benefits of Olea25-Hydroxytyrosol
The benefits of Hydroxytyrosol, an extract of Olive Oil and Leaf has been reported to have therapeutic influences:
These benefits of hydroxytyrosol promote healthy heart, nervous system, metabolic and cellular function through anti-oxidative and anti-inflammatory behaviors.
Promotes Heart Health
Oxidation of LDL plays an important role in the development of atherosclerosis.
Olive oil polyphenols may have anti-oxidant protective properties not only by the free-radical scavenging but also for the modulation of gene expression such the CD40 ligation and its downstream products in human beings.
Inhibits Platelet Aggregation
Another process involved in the development of atherosclerotic lessions is platelet aggregation, which is the previous step in thrombus formation.
Hydroxytyrosol can be considered anti-thrombotic, since it significantly reduces platelet aggregation.
Strong Anti-Oxidant Capacity of Hydroxytyrosol
Hydroxytyrosol has the highest anti-oxidant potency of olive polyphenols. It is an effective scavenger of several free radicals.
Protects Against All 5 Common Free Radicals
Olea25® Hydroxytyrosol has antioxidative properties that include:
- Increased Glutathione levels
- Skin damage related to UVB exposure
- Low Density Lipoprotein(LDL) oxidation
- Prevents passive smoking-induced oxidative stress
- Protects against oxidative DNA damage
Protects Progresses of Diseases like AIDS and Cancer
Regarding the cancer chemo-preventive activities, it has been shown that HOTYR(Hydroxytyrosol) is able to inhibit both initiation and promotion/progression phases of carcinogenesis by preventing the DNA damage induced by different genotoxic molecules and by inhibiting proliferation and inducing apoptosis in different tumors cell lines, respectively (73, 74).
Hydroxytyrosol prevents oxidative DNA damage in the three breast cell lines, protecting against oxidative DNA damage in mammary cells.
Anti-Inflammatory Benefits of Hydroxytyrosol
Subjects with Osteoarthritis(OA) and Rheumatoid Arthritis(RA) reported decreased pain and improvement in activities of daily living. Statistically significant decrease in serum homocysteine. With high levels of homocysteine patients with RA have associated higher level of mortality from cardiovascular events.
In addition, subjects with RA had a statistically significant decrease in serum homocysteine. High homocysteine levels in patients with RA have been associated with higher rates of mortality from cardiovascular events.
Hydroxytyrosol effects formation and maintenance of bone, and is an effective remedy in the treatment of osteoporosis symptoms.
Neuroprotective Activity of Hyroxytyrosol
Hydroxytyrosol inhibits the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines in an in vitro model of neuroinflammation. In contrast oleuropein, the principal phenolic in olive leaf, was significantly less effective at inhibiting cytokine production. These results suggest that the anti-inflammatory activity of hydroxytyrosol may impact neuroinflammation in Parkinson’s and other neurodegenerative diseases.
Chronic Inflammatory Processes
Anti-inflammatory benefits of Hydroxytyrosol on Nitric Oxide and chemokine production point to their impact on chronic inflammatory processes in endothelium or arthritis.
Protection Against Diabetes and Metabolic Disorder
Protective actions of insulin sensitivity related to diabetes and glucose regulation.
Glucose Regulation and Insulin Sensitivity with Olive Leaf Polyphenols
The effects of OL and HT on insulin action have recently been demonstrated by De Bock et al. in overweight middle-aged men: administration of a diet supplemented with olive leaf polyphenols (51.1 mg OL, 9.7 mg HT for day) determined both amelioration of insulin action and secretion, two aspects of glucose regulation. Such an effect was independent of fat distribution, dietary intakes and physical activity and was comparable to that seen with drugs used to treat diabetes.
Olive (Olea europaea L.) leaf polyphenols improve insulin sensitivity in middle-aged overweight men: a randomized, placebo-controlled, crossover trial. PLoS One.2013;8(3):e57622.
Mediterranean-style diet effective in reducing the prevalence of the metabolic syndrome
Consumption of a Mediterranean-style diet by patients with the metabolic syndrome was associated with improvement of endothelial function and a significant reduction of markers of systemic vascular inflammation
